General Chemistry

Part I: Sections I-VI

(Emphasis is on stoichiometry, atomic structure, periodic trends, electrochemistry, gases and gas laws, and phases and phase changes)

At the beginning of each of the 12 sections in the General Chemistry Review Books (2017 edition) is a page outlining selected equations, facts, concepts, and shortcuts that might be helpful for that particular section. After reading the text in each section and completing the accompanying MCAT-style passages, we feel that you will have a better conceptual understanding of the material important to the general chemistry found in the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Bilogical Systems of the MCAT.

Section I: Stoichiometry

This section aims to reaquaint you with unit conversions, elemental analysis, solution concentrations, balancing reactions, and reaction types.

Passages and Solutions

Section I includes 34 free-standing questions and 6 MCAT-style passages with detailed solutions. Passage topics are centered around information important to stoichiometry.

Section II: Atomic Structure

This section aims to reaquaint you with atomic theory, subatomic particles, classical experiments, atomic structure, electronic structure, light absorption and emission, and molecular structure.

Passages and Solutions

Section II includes 14 free-standing questions and 6 MCAT-style passages with detailed solutions. Passage topics are centered around information important to atomic theory.

Section III: Periodic Trends

This section aims to reaquaint you with the periodic table, atomic radii, ioniztion energy, electron affinity, and electronegativity.

Passages and Solutions

Section III includes 12 free-standing questions and 6 MCAT-style passages with detailed solutions. Passage topics are centered around information important to periodic trends.

Section IV: Electrochemistry

This section aims to reaquaint you with redox reactions, voltage and energy, and electrochemical cells.

Passages and Solutions

Section IV includes 16 free-standing questions and 6 MCAT-style passages with detailed solutions. Passage topics are centered around information important to electrochemistry.

Section V: Gases and Gas Laws

This section aims to reaquaint you with the terminology associated with gases, gas laws, gas system properties, and gas motion.

Passages and Solutions

Section V includes 18 free-standing questions and 6 MCAT-style passages with detailed solutions. Passage topics are centered around information important to gases and gas laws.

Section VI: Phases and Phase Changes

This section aims to reaquaint you with phases, the phase change process, liquid-gas equilibrium, and colligative properties.

Passages and Solutions

Section VI includes 21 free-standing questions and 6 MCAT-style passages with detailed solutions. Passage topics are centered around information important to gases and gas laws.

Practice Diagnostics

At the end of Book I are six practice diagnostics, each with 9 passages, free-standing questions, and detailed solutions.
